Given the large number of treatments and products available on the market, it is completely normal to feel overwhelmed and clueless as to what and how to use these products on your skin. After all, nobody wants to overwhelm their skin with too many good products and end up ruining their skin.
  • So how can we choose which products (serums with active ingredients) to incorporate into our skincare routine?

  • Serum layering is a relatively new idea in the beauty industry that has risen, due to the growing number of serums that are developed with ultra-specific functions.
  • Consider this: you're looking at a bunch of serums that are each formulated for their specific uses, such as Serum A for brightening, Serum B for wrinkle-fighting, Serum C for exfoliating, and Serum D for breakout-soothing.
  • However, more often than not, we will have more than one skincare concern that we want to solve, and if you use all of the serums available on the market without considering order and their active ingredients, you may not only steer away from your desired results, but even damage your skin's natural barrier.
  • Thanks to their lightweight, fast-absorbing formulas, serums can easily be layered to target conflicting skin concerns. However, more isn’t always better, and it’s important to know how to layer serums for optimal results, and minimal irritation.

Now that you know what ingredients work will with each other, and which products work better together for specific skin concerns,
serum-layering seems like an easy, straightforward path to great skin, right?

Before you get too excited, here are some rules and factors that you should take into consideration as well.
RULE #1:
SERUMS COME FIRST.
Serums should be applied first followed by moisturizers.
Moisturizers are usually thicker creams and oils that create a protective layer over your skin and will hinder the absorption of your serums
RULE #2:
STICK WITH TWO.
As a rule of thumb, facialists don't recommend layering more than two serums at once as it overwhelms the skin with an unnecessary excess of products on the face. It also makes the product you use last difficult to penetrate and absorb into your skin and deliver results.
RULE #3:
START WITH THE LOW.
Once you've selected the serums you'd like to use together for your specific skin concern, it is now time to decide which serum to use first.
The rule of thumb is to always start with the product that has the lower pH level. Apply low pH products (acidic) before high pH products (alkaline).

Products that are lower in pH level (pH 2.5-4) including AHA, BHA and Vitamin C absorb better and should be incorporated first or earlier in your skincare routine while products that are higher in the pH level (pH 4.5-7) such as Retinols, Niacinamide, Hyluronic Acid and facial oils are more likely to be skin barrier friendly.
RULE #4:
SOAK AND MASSAGE.
You want your skin to get the most out of your products, so make sure they are completely absorbed!
To improve absorption, let the serums soak and wait a minute or two in between serums. You could also throw in a massage with a jade rollerto improve blood circulation and rate of absorption.
The most important thing is to listen to your skin. If you experience any minor skin irritation, make sure to boost hydration and apply a moisturizer
after the serums. If symptoms persist, cut back on the active ingredients and try another combination.

There you go! We hope that this guide has made your serum-layering mission easier,
and we wish you a comfortable journey to healthy, glowing skin!
Still not sure what serums to layer?
It depends on how your skin is feeling that day.
